Movie theaters were popular places of entertainment in the early 20th century. Movies were only the most recent addition to theaters, they also hosted plays, musical concerts, and were usually some of the only places to have a popular commodity- air conditioning. Camden’s theaters varied from the small and average to the extravagant and world class entertainment. The Stanley Theater, which used to be on the corner of Broadway and Market, right across from City Hall and the Cathedral, was a million dollar theater when it was built in 1926 and was the most expensive of its kind.
